La mascota virtual se lanzó en Japón en 1996 y un año más tarde llegó al país. Cómo surgió la idea del juguete sensación de los 90.
Supo ser furor en los 90 en el público infantil e incluso generó pesadillas entre los maestros a los cuales les costaba que los niños dejaran de mirar un pequeño llavero con tres botones. Este año se celebra el 25° aniversario del Tamagotchi, que llegó a la Argentina en 1997 y cuya historia no está exenta de polémica con respecto a su creación.
El tierno dispositivo fue creado por la japonesa Bandai – ahora fusionada con el gigante de videojuegos Namco- en 1996 y al año siguiente comenzó su expansión internacional, en particular en los Estados Unidos. La marca, que en realidad no se trata de mascotas sino más bien de una raza extraterrestre, se desarrolló hacia otros ámbitos, como los videojuegos, libros e incluso películas.
En 2017, para celebrar sus dos décadas, la compañía lanzó una edición especial retro, y en 2019 sacó a la venta una versión a color, con conexión bluetooth y más funcionalidades. Según Bandai, 6 de cada 10 usuarios del Tamagotchi original en la actualidad son millennials o adultos nostálgicos.
