Alarma por animales rodeados de basura en las costas de Península Valdés
Toda la basura llega desde los barcos pesqueros que recorren el mar argentino en busca del calamar y el langostino. Grupos de vecinos se organizan para limpiar las playas, pero no alcanza.
Lejos del avistaje de ballenas o del deambular de los turistas por el centro de Puerto Madryn, hay otra Península de Valdés que sufre la invasión de plástico en sus cientos de kilómetros de playas vírgenes, sólo habitadas por elefantes marinos y pingüinos. Allí se ve a los animales deambular entre gran cantidad de deshechos que son escupidos por el mar.
En la arena, en la que no se ven pisadas humanas, si está repleta de cajones, baldes y restos de redes de pesca que arrojan desde los cientos de barcos que recorren el Océano Atlántico en busca del preciado langostino o calamar patagónico.
Casi todo contaminado
Al menos el 80% de las playas de Puerto Pirámides, en la costa de la Península Valdés, está contaminada con residuos de la industria pesquera, según pudo constatarse durante una recorrida de 8 kilómetros que realizaron especialistas del Ministerio de Ambiente de Nación y de la provincia de Chubut, según informó el subsecretario de Conservación y Áreas Protegidas de la provincia, Sergio Paul Casin.
Las fotos que se viralizaron en las redes sociales corresponden a una playa de difícil acceso ubicada en mar abierto en el sur de la península y muy cerca de Morro NuevoEn ese sentido, desde la organización patagónica Playas limpias explicaron que “las autoridades solo recorrieron una pequeña porción de los cientos de kilómetros que tienen las costas de la península. Lo que vieron en Pirámides se repite en el resto de los sitios menos visitados”.
La Península Valdés es un accidente costero sobre el mar Argentino, en la provincia del Chubut. Desde 1999, es Patrimonio de la Humanidad declarado por la Unesco en Argentina. Asimismo, recibe la mayor población reproductora de ballenas francas australes y contiene numerosas reservas naturales.
Casin recorrió las costas junto con autoridades del Ministerio de Ambiente de la Nación, que se constituyeron en la zona para constatar la veracidad de las imágenes y videos en los que se observa a elefantes marinos tratando de llegar al mar entre cajones de plástico.
Alejandro Ferro es un habitante de Valdés, nacido y criado. Administra un campo que es de su familia desde su bisabuelo. Sus tierras dan al mar y allí muchas veces se encuentra con animales en malas condiciones. “Muchas veces me topé con un elefante marino atrapado en parte de una red de pesca –enfatizó en diálogo con Infobae-. Si le hacemos una autopsia a un pingüino muerto vamos a descubrir gran cantidad de plástico en su organismo”.
Playas de plástico
Las fotos que se viralizaron en las redes sociales corresponden a una playa de difícil acceso ubicada en mar abierto en el sur de la península y muy cerca de Morro Nuevo. Es la zona elegida por los elefantes marinos para aparearse y parir sus nuevas crías. Allí estaban a la espera, entre un poco de arena y cientos de toneladas de plástico cuando fueron retratados por habitantes de la Península Valdés.
Los elefantes marinos en la playa que se viralizó en las redes sociales mueven sus miles de kilos entre el plástico y las redes de pesca pérdidas. Parecen no inmutarse. No entender los cambios en su ecosistemaLa agrupación Playas Limpias que planea levantar plástico en algunos sitios de la zona el próximo 25 de septiembre. “Vamos a ir unas 60 personas con cinco camiones para levantar todo lo que podamos. Seguro serán varias toneladas de basura”, se entusiasmó Ferro.
Los elefantes marinos en la playa que se viralizó en las redes sociales mueven sus miles de kilos entre el plástico y las redes de pesca pérdidas. Parecen no inmutarse. No entender los cambios en su ecosistema.
“Este problema existe hace como 30 años. Lo bueno es que ahora se visibiliza. Quizás también porque es mucho más grave que antes –explicó Ferro-. Es muy triste ver a los animales entre plásticos. Sólo porque el ser humano no sabe cuidar el planeta”.
Chubut cuenta con el “Plan de Censo y Limpieza Costera”, que se lleva adelante todos los años, y consiste en organizar cuadrillas de recolección de basura en el área costera. El gobierno provincial informó que en las últimas campañas de limpieza se juntaron más de 2.000 cajones de plástico de la industria pesquera a los que, además, se llenó con otros desechos que se colocaron en su interior como baldes, pedazos de cajas, guantes, cabos, partes de redes, palets de madera para descarga y bolsas.
Sobre ese tema desde Playas limpias salieron al cruce del Gobierno provincial apenas se difundió la noticia. “La última limpieza que realizaron fue en el 2016 y el dueño del campo por el que entraron a la costa todavía está esperando que le retiren los cajones recolectados”, escribieron en su cuenta de Instagram.

Mientras planea la acción para limpiar una porción pequeña de la playa patagónica, Ferro plantea cuál sería la solución al problema o por lo menos cómo podría atenuarse. “Fallan los controles a los barcos –resaltó el miembro de Playas Limpias-. Se debería controlar con cuántos cajones sale cada nave y con cuántos vuelve. Lo mismo con los baldes, las redes y otros elementos de los pesqueros. Prefectura le echa la culpa al puerto, y viceversa”.

Ferro, en tanto, agrega otro punto importante para limpiar de plástico las playas del sur. “Es importante la educación. Que los trabajadores pesqueros y las empresas entiendan que están destruyendo su fuente de trabajo, que es el mar argentino. Porque si toda esa cantidad de plástico está en las playas, imaginen lo que habrá en el océano”.
El problema no es nuevo y para mitigarlo el gobierno de Chubut obligó a las empresas a rotular los cajones para saber el origen y habilitar la vía sancionatoria. “Eso no dio resultado porque las empresas dicen que le pierden la trazabilidad al cajón y no se pueden hacer cargo”, sostuvo el funcionario provincial.

Comer plástico
Un reciente informe del programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (Pnuma) da un panorama poco alentador sobre la basura que cubre los mares del mundo.
Según el organismo, el 85% de la contaminación de los océanos está dada por residuos plásticos. De esa manera, hay hasta 199 millones de toneladas de plásticos en los océanos. Además, el problema está lejos de tener solución por parte de los gobiernos, ya que las tasas de reciclaje de plásticos son inferiores al 10%.
En tanto, el mismo informe prevé un futuro para el planeta Tierra desolador. Estiman que los vertidos de plásticos en los océanos se triplicarán para 2040 si no se toman medidas significativas en el corto plazo.

Todos esos cajones y baldes de los barcos que llegan a la playa, se van convirtiendo en microplásticos con el paso del tiempo e invaden los organismos de los animales.
Los enmallamientos en redes y sogas de pesca son una de las principales causas de muerte de ballenas. Por ejemplo, la ballena Franca del Atlántico Norte, de la cual quedan menos de 400 individuos, se encuentra en peligro crítico de extinción como consecuencia de las muertes por enmallamientos y colisiones con embarcaciones.
Los fragmentos plásticos menores a 5 milímetros son considerados microplásticos y representan el problema principal. También porque su diminuto tamaño hace que sea muy difícil poder detectarlos en el momento de la limpieza. De hecho la revista científica Environmental Pollution indicó que el Mar Argentino es de los más contaminados con con este tipo de material a nivel mundial.
Los elefantes marinos se muestran inmutable frente a la invasión del plástico en su hábitat natural. Se arrastran y hasta se suben sobre los canastos de plástico sin darse cuenta. Los habitantes de la península intentan limpiar las playas, pero se hace indispensable el control sobre la industria pesquera para evitar la contaminación de las arenas en la que reposa la fauna patagónica.
