Carlos Vives y cómo encontró su identidad colombiana gracias al rock argentino
Cantante y actor, el colombiano es máximo referente de la música de su país. Charly García, Disney y 30 años de carrera.
El festejo por las tres décadas en la música que lo trae al Movistar Arena el 3 de junio lo encuentra a Carlos Vives en plena actividad. Volvió a actuar (se lo puede ver en la serie de Disney El club de los graves, donde hace de un profesor de música poco ortodoxo), promociona disco nuevo regrabando las composiciones de uno de sus referentes con el sonido que lo hizo una marca registrada y disfruta de haberse convertido en un embajador de la música colombiana, reinterpretándola y reivindicándola.
El folclore para Carlos Vives no se graba, se vive y se siente. Tal vez no haya en la actualidad un representante más genuino de esa tropicalidad o, mejor dicho, de ese rock de pueblo que, aunque sea hace rato parte del mar, se anima a nadar contra la corriente si se trata de buscar nuevos desafíos.
El humor y la música, a Vives le vienen de familia. Este artista que pasó la mitad de su vida llevando sus canciones a distintos escenarios, creyendo que lo que hacía no era lo que la industria esperaba de él, se convirtió en el máximo referente de la música de su país.
Y no sólo respaldado por su público y sus colegas, sino por el propio sistema que él creía enfrentar, pero que lo acompañó en los pasos más importantes de su carrera.
Con audacia y determinación logró que los cambios sustanciales que atravesó y sigue atravesando el negocio de la música no sólo no lo hicieran tambalear, sino que le dieran más confianza en su intuición. Incorpora lo mejor de esa industria y no pierde su esencia. Una fórmula tan concreta como difícil de alcanzar. Pero no para Vives.
Humor a los contratiempos
Del otro lado de la pantalla y con un nombre de mujer arriba de un fondo gris, se escucha su voz. La imagen no llega y él se ríe.
“Mi papá era oftalmólogo –cuenta- y cuando se graduó de médico a la abuela de él le estaban dando unas cataratas en el ojo. Mi papá le dijo: “Abuela, le opero las cataratas porque va a perder un ojo”. Y ella le contestó: “Ay Luis Aurelio para lo que hay que ver en estos tiempos con un ojo me basta”. Vives lanza una carcajada recordando la observación ácida de su bisabuela. Le da orgullo y se siente reflejado en esa forma de ponerle humor a los contratiempos.
El colombiano, que el 3 de junio llega con «El Tour de los 30” a la Argentina para presentarse en el porteño Movistar Arena, todavía riendo aparece desde Las Vegas a donde viajó para recibir un premio en los LAMAS (Latin American Music Awards).
Aunque cuenta con 17 Grammy Latinos, dos Grammy y un lugar en el Salón de la Fama de los Premios Billboard de la Música Latina, no resulta extraño cuando dice que aun no se cree lo de los galardones.
“Nunca aspiré a esto. El camino que escogimos en la música cuando empezamos no nos auguraba premios ni que fuese una música que cruzara las fronteras, entonces siempre nos sorprendió cuando nos llevaban a otras partes, cuando nos decían ´mirá allá en Argentina ha pegado esta canción´. Es como que no te creías nada, entonces nunca pienso mucho en eso y a veces creo, aunque suene un poco descarado, que siempre estamos como empezando”, reconoce.
-¿En dónde reside esa búsqueda que te hace sentir que empezás de cero?
-Yo creo que el nuestro ha sido un camino muy bonito, pero también muy experimental. Entonces nunca estamos como esperando muchas cosas. Yo creo que no hago folclore, creo que el folklore no se graba y pensar así es pensar completamente diferente a lo que piensa la industria.
Hace 30 años, si uno quería ser moderno tenía que hacer algo de otra parte que tenía mucho éxito. Y si querías hacer algo y ser de donde tú eras tenías que hacer algo folclórico. El camino que tomamos nosotros fue no creer en esas cosas, no creer que el folclore se viste de gala o que hay que ponerse muy elegante para hacerlo.
Sino que pensamos que de ahí podía nacer el rock de mi pueblo. que yo lo llamo así y en ese camino estamos. Ni siquiera hemos llegado, seguimos el recorrido. Entonces nunca espero realmente cosas de la industria. Porque creemos cosas que ellos no creen.
Primero el actor, luego el músico
Carlos Vives habla en plural, concibe su trabajo como el resultado de una apuesta de equipo. Aunque no lo explicita en su decir, deja en claro que solo no hubiera llegado a esta celebración de tres décadas con la música.
Si bien cuando empezó a cantar ya tenía una sólida carrera como actor, fue cuando se hizo cargo de su interés particular y de su propia búsqueda artística cuando perfiló un estilo que lo desmarcó de la música tradicional, incorporándola en su sonido, pero lo impulsó, al mismo tiempo, a mirar lo que sucedía entre sus contemporáneos.
-Lograste lo que algunos persiguen toda la vida, que es tener una identidad, una marca autoral, un “sonido Vives” que encontramos en tus composiciones y en otras influenciadas por vos. ¿Cuándo te diste cuenta de que tenías una marca propia?
Yo creo que cuando grabamos este primer álbum, Clásicos de la provincia (1993) ya sentíamos que yo iba a encontrar un sonido muy mío, porque mi visión sobre nuestra música tradicional era diferente al gran movimiento de la música vallenata o cumbiera colombiana. Pero después de La tierra del olvido (1995), que fue mi segundo álbum me di cuenta de que empezaban a aparecer jóvenes músicos en distintas partes de Colombia entendiendo lo que habíamos hecho, como una nueva corriente. Y nacieron varias figuras que han tenido éxito y que vienen de lo que puedo llamar esa escuela de rock de mi pueblo.
Antes existían las baladas, el pop en español, yo mismo grabé dos álbumes con CBS de baladas, y estaba la música tropical con los vallenatos, la salsa, el merengue, las orquestaciones cumbieras de la industria de Medellín. Pero a partir de allí es como que se unieron mundos, entonces sonó muy pop pero al mismo tiempo era tropical. Y en España alguien dijo: “Ah, estos manes inventaron algo que se llama el Tropipop”.
En Colombia no lo valoramos mucho, aunque empezaron a aparecer figuras como Fonseca, el mismo Juanes a su estilo entendió que esa música que tenía ahí en su región podía llevarla al rock and roll. Aparecen movimientos en Medellín y Cartagena y jóvenes que empiezan a hacer unas baladas tropicales o ese tropipop. Ahí me di cuenta que habíamos encontrado un sonido nuevo de la colombianidad.
Y hoy podemos hablar de Camilo, de Sebastián Yatra, de varios de ellos que vienen de esa escuela de entender que podían encontrar una música del mundo, pero con ciertas identidades. Entendí que había una corriente nueva para proyectar nuestra tropicalidad.
Entre la raíz y la modernidad
Es que, como cantan sus amados Serú Girán, mientras mira las nuevas olas, Vives ya es parte del mar. Y ahí, surfeando la ola entre raíz y modernidad, también logra la transversalidad generacional.
En sus conciertos se pueden ver niños y adultos mayores en igual proporción. Los rockeros lo adoran y los artistas urbanos lo buscan para grabar. El colombiano entiende esto como una consecuencia natural de su crianza y de sus vínculos familiares.
“En casa, cuando nos sentábamos frente a la tele, yo podía estar con mi abuelo, mi papá, mi mamá, la señora que trabajaba en la casa, el más pequeño. Siempre creí que las cosas eran para todos. La música que llegaba a mi casa y que cantábamos a todos nos gustaba. Cuando empecé en TV, las series donde trabajé reunían a la familia. Yo creo que naturalmente no excluyo. Hago cosas para los grandes que los niños también pueden disfrutar y al revés”, dice y se ríe como celebrando esta fortuna.
En medio de esa coctelera de sonidos, la irrupción del rock argentino en la vida de Vives le dio otro vuelco inesperado y trascendental a su búsqueda. Ahí entendió un poco más el tango que escuchaban su abuelo y su mamá, gardeleanos de cepa.
Hablar de sus raíces, de los vallenatos de los juglares que escuchó de chico y lo enamoraron del género, lo emociona. Hablar del rock argentino, lo apasiona.
“Cuando llega el rock en nuestro idioma, algo en lo que me empiezo a interesar terminando el colegio, caminando las calles, empiezo a entender mucho de la identidad argentina. Entendí que ese rock, por supuesto con una influencia inglesa, y ese amor por lo americano, me despertaba algo distinto», dice.
Y continúa: «A mí no me enseñaron a querer a Los Beatles, no me los dieron, es un grupo que nunca me marcó, como sí lo hicieron Serú Giran, Sui Generis, Pedro y Pablo, Celeste, Man Ray. Y a través de ese rock empecé a escuchar cosas en inglés como Supertramp, pero yo entendí que en lo argentino se habían cocinado cosas muy importantes de todas esas influencias, hasta de la música clásica como le pasó a Charly. Y eso despertó un nacimiento en la ciudad donde yo he vivido casi toda mi vida, que es Bogotá”.
Y agrega: “Ahí ví cómo los grupos bogotanos, un poco inspirados en todo lo que pasaba con el rock en Argentina, empezaron a hacer canciones inspiradas en Bogotá y empezaban las músicas nuestras del interior a tomar esos sonidos rockeros. Un poco todo un movimiento de rock nacional nuestro está muy inspirado en todo lo que pasó allá y que coincide con la llegada por primera vez de Charly, de Los Enanitos, de Luis Alberto, de Soda…».
«Entonces fue un ejemplo muy importante entender cómo desde nuestras raíces podíamos encontrar un sonido para nosotros que hablara y contara de nuestras historias, de nuestras ciudades, de nuestros pueblos. Ha sido un aprendizaje increíble y el rock argentino fue esa escuela maravillosa también”.
Una mirada en perspectiva
-Celebrar 30 años de carrera, indefectiblemente, te obliga a revisar ese comienzo, ¿Cómo es verte desde esta perspectiva en esos años iniciáticos?
-Éramos jóvenes, felices e indocumentados. En esos años yo hice la serie Escalona, inspirada en las canciones de Rafael Escalona, que fue un compositor de la región, que incluso estudió en el colegio con mi papá. Yo me crié oyendo sus canciones, y cuando me dieron la oportunidad de hacer esa historia, digo que fue como la chispa que prendió la mecha.
Yo sentí que era eso, que eso me regresó a mi casa, a las faldas de mi mamá, a sentarme en las piernas de mi papá. Yo supe que alguna gente en Colombia descubrió la música vallenata con esa serie, descubrieron a Escalona, pero yo quería contarles de otros compositores que yo había conocido de niño, como Carlos Huertas, Luis Enrique Martinez, Emiliano Zuleta y ahí es cuando grabo los Clásicos de la provincia.
Y se registraron de una manera en la que no se había grabado la música vallenata hasta entonces. Nació mi sonido, pero me faltaba Escalona.
-Ahora editaste “Escalona nunca se ha grabado así”, ¿Cómo se grabó?
-Cuando yo hice la música para la serie, como era de época, se grabó de una manera muy tradicional. No se aplicaban baterías, ni guitarras eléctricas, ni teclados. Lo que hicimos después, con esta idea del “rock de mi pueblo” fue electrificar ese sonido, buscar un sonido nuevo para una cosa que venía desde nuestros ancestros. Y para celebrar estos 30 años decidimos grabar el álbum.
