Del Potro vuelve a operarse de la rodilla
La ilusión de poder estar en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio.
La cirugía será este martes. “Todo es muy duro desde el fallecimiento de mi padre. Pero también siento la fuerza que me envía desde arriba”, reveló el tandilense en un mensaje publicado en Instagram.
La pesadilla de Juan Martín Del Potro con su rodilla derecha, que comenzó en octubre de 2018 cuando se fracturó por primera vez la rótula durante un partido del Masters 1000 de Shanghai, parece no tener fin. Pero el tandilense no se rinde y sigue buscando la manera de regresar al circuito. Lo mueve su amor por el tenis. Por eso, a 23 meses de su último partido -en junio de 2019 en Queen’s- decidió jugarse una carta más, con la ilusión de poder finalmente volver a competir y a disfrutar dentro de una cancha.
Delpo anunció este lunes, a través de un breve video publicado en las redes sociales, que volverá a pasar por el quirófano. Será en Chicago y la operación estará a cargo del doctor Jorge Chahla, con quien viene consultado por el problema en la rodilla desde hace varios meses.
«Hemos probado muchísimos tratamientos conservadores y alternativos y no tuvimos buenos resultados. Entonces creemos que la mejor opción es la cirugía. El doctor Chahla sabe el deseo que tengo de volver a jugar al tenis y de estar en los Juegos Olímpicos y por eso decidimos que hacer esto lo antes posible es lo mejor», contó el argentino, quien por la larga inactividad cayó al 173° escalón del ranking.
«No vienen siendo semanas fáciles. Desde que murió mi papá todo me cuesta muchísimo. Pero un día me levanté, llamé al médico y le dije ‘Vamos a intentarlo’. Sentí la fuerza que me mandan desde arriba para no bajar los brazos y poder salir adelante», reconoció Delpo, recordando con los ojos vidriosos a su papá Daniel, quien falleció a principios de enero.
«No quiero dejar de intentarlo así que estoy acá. Toda la fuerza y la energía que me manden va a ser bien recibida y me va a ayudar mucho para pasar por esta nueva piedra en el camino», cerró el campeón del US Open 2009.
La que se realizará este martes será la octava cirugía en su carrera, marcada por lesiones complicadas y largos procesos de recuperación. La primera fue en 2010 en la muñeca derecha. Luego, tuvo que operarse tres veces la muñeca izquierda, en marzo de 2014 y en enero y junio de 2015. Y cuando el dolor de cabeza por esas dolencias había quedado en el pasado, llegó esa fractura de rótula -insólita para un jugador de tenis- que se transformó en una nueva pesadilla.
Del Potro ya se sometió a tres operaciones en la rodilla derecha, en junio de 2019 y en enero y agosto de 2020.
Por el problema en la rodilla, el tandilense ya se sometió a tres intervenciones quirúrgicas. La primera en junio de 2019 en Barcelona; la segunda en enero de 2020 en Miami; y la tercera, en agosto pasado en Berna, Suiza, a cargo de un equipo liderado por el doctor Roland Biedert, médico de cabecera de Roger Federer. Ninguna logró llevarlo de nuevo a las canchas.
Por eso en diciembre, viajó a Porto Alegre para realizarse un tratamiento en base a células de su propia médula ósea con el fin de acelerar la recuperación de la zona afectada. El resultado tampoco fue el esperado y su regreso, que se proyectaba en ese entonces para esta semana en Miami, se dilató aún más.
Encima, el 11 de enero, la vida le dio un golpe muy duro. Daniel Del Potro, que se había sometido en diciembre a una operación cardíaca, falleció a los 63 años. Él había sido una presencia constante durante la carrera de Juan Martín. Lo acompañó muy de cerca durante su etapa de junior y luego de que el ex número tres del mundo diera el salto al profesionalismo, se mantuvo más alejado de la vida pública, aunque siguió apoyándolo incondicionalmente.

La muerte de su papá afectó su ánimo, como el mismo Delpo contó este lunes en el video que compartió en Instagram. Es que sus padres eran una de sus motivaciones principales para seguir luchando con la rodilla. «Mis viejos nunca me vieron jugar en vivo en un Grand Slam. Eso es algo que no me deja estar tranquilo, no me deja bajar los brazos», contó a mediados de 2020 en charla con Alejandro Fantino en ESPN.
Pero finalmente, el tandilense encontró la fuerza y la motivación para seguir peleando, para jugarse una carta más y tratar de ganarle por fin la batalla a esa maldita rodilla derecha.
Conmueve la fuerza de Delpo para seguir intentado volver a jugar al tenis después de tantos problemas físicos. Ha sido un enorme jugador a pesar de tantos obstáculos y es conmovedor cada uno de sus regresos a las canchas de tenis, siempre super competitivo. UN SUPER GRANDE DEL DEPORTE ARGENTINO.
