Fue condenado por violación por un jurado blanco; un tribunal de apelaciones comprobó años después que era inocente
Ronnie Long es un afroestadunidense de Carolina del Norte que pasó 44 años en prisión, condenado por una violación que no cometió. Luego de que una corte de apelaciones probara su inocencia, aunque de manera tardía, el gobernador del estado firmó un decreto para liberarlo.
Esto sucedió en diciembre del año pasado, pero ahora el hombre vuelve a ser noticia porque considera que el monto indemnizatorio que recibió por sus años de cárcel –US$750.000– le parece insuficiente y exige una compensación mayor.
“Estuvo en una celda cuando sus padres murieron, cuando su hijo creció y se graduó. Lo perdió todo durante esos 44 años, y ciertamente merece más de lo que ha recibido”, le dijo Jamie Lau, abogado de Long a la señal de Estados Unidos CNN.

El hombre, que salió a finales de 2020 de la correccional de Albermale, había sido condenado en 1976 a cadena perpetua por la violación de una mujer blanca.
El jurado que le impuso la pena estaba conformado por completo por integrantes blancos, que determinaron que Long, de entonces 20 años y habitante de la localidad de Concord, había abusado y robado a la mujer, viuda de un ejecutivo de la compañía textil local Cannon Mills.
¿Mi vida solo vale 750.000 dólares?
Después de mantener su inocencia y perseguir toda una vida de apelaciones y mociones denegadas, el condenado fue liberado. Fue cuando, recién en septiembre del año pasado, los tribunales determinaron que Long había sido condenado por error.
Luego de su sentencia, “un goteo de revelaciones posteriores al juicio desenterró un patrón inquietante y sorprendente de supresión policial deliberada de pruebas”, escribió la jueza de la Corte de Apelaciones del Cuarto Circuito de Estados Unidos, Stephanie Thacker, según lo que consigna la citada señal.
Entre los errores en el juicio que determinaron la culpabilidad de Long se encuentra el hecho de que se hallaron unas 40 huellas digitales en el lugar del crimen, y ninguna era del acusado. Lo peor es que estas muestras fueron ocultadas a la defensa por muchos años, así como otras pruebas que exculpaban al imputado.
“Todo lo que sucedió para ponerme tras las rejas fue intencional ¿Cómo pueden decir que mi vida solo vale US$750.000? Nunca debería haber un límite en la vida de una persona”, señaló el propio Long a la CNN.
Según lo que establece la ley del estado de Carolina del Norte, lo que le corresponde a Long, que hoy tiene 65 años es un pago de 50.000 dólares por cada año que pasó en prisión siendo inocente. Pero la norma establece también que esta suma tiene un tope, que es el que le entregaron al falsamente condenado: 750.000 dólares.
Ahora, tanto Long como su abogado, están intentando que se revise esa ley, porque el monto que se entrega a una persona que estuvo privada de su libertad durante tantos años sin merecerlo en modo alguno les parece insuficiente.
“Al menos dos hombres fueron exonerados después de más de 44 años de encarcelamiento, lo que pone de relieve la insuficiencia del estatuto de compensación y ese límite”, dijo el abogado de Long.
