El presidente brasileño, Jair Bolsonaro, informó este martes que dio positivo por COVID-19 y comenzó a ser tratado con hidroxicloroquina y azitromicina.
“Acaba de salir [el resultado del test] con resultado positivo”, anunció el mandatario de 65 años en una entrevista televisiva desde la residencia oficial en Brasilia.
“Comenzó el domingo con una breve indisposición”, agregó, quien aseguró que ahora se siente “perfectamente bien”, al punto de que informó sobre el resultado del examen conversando con los reporteros a menos de dos metros de distancia, aunque con la máscara preceptiva.
“Estoy bien, normal. Incluso quiero dar un paseo por aquí, pero no puedo debido a recomendaciones médicas”, dijo.
Durante los últimos meses, Bolsonaro, uno de los más escépticos del mundo sobre la gravedad del coronavirus, ha desafiado casi a diario al virus, al que llegó a calificar de “gripecita”, circulando por las calles en plena cuarentena, al asistir a actos públicos sin la máscara preceptiva, abrazando y besando a partidarios sin cuidado alguno y con un desdeño constante frente a la enfermedad.
“Confieso que creí haberlo contraído hace unos meses atrás”, pero “no esperaba que esto hubiera ocurrido conmigo”, explicó Bolsonaro, quien ha cancelado su agenda para los próximos días y permanecerá en cuarentena en su casa, aunque aclaró que no sabe “estar parado”, por lo que seguirá despachando mediante videoconferencias.
Bolsonaro ha dicho más de una vez que sus antecedentes como atleta lo protegerían del virus, y que no sería más que una “gripecita” si lo contrajera.

Según explicó este martes, al anunciar el positivo del examen, insistió en que, si bien es necesario “preocuparse con el virus”, también es necesario “cuidar de la economía” y retomar cuanto antes “sea posible” las actividades productivas, porque “el desempleo mata también”.
El mes pasado, las ciudades y los estados comenzaron a levantar las restricciones que se habían impuesto para controlar la propagación del virus, ya que sus curvas estadísticas de muertes comenzaron a disminuir junto con la tasa de ocupación de las unidades de cuidados intensivos. Brasil, la sexta nación más poblada del mundo, con más de 210 millones de personas, es uno de los epicentros mundiales de la pandemia.
El lunes, Bolsonaro dijo a sus partidarios en Brasilia que se sometió a una radiografía de sus pulmones que mostró que estaban limpios, y que le realizarían una prueba de COVID-19. El martes, le dijo a CNN Brasil que su fiebre había disminuido.

Bolsonaro dio negativo tres veces en marzo después de reunirse con el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, en Florida. Varios miembros de su delegación en los EEUU más tarde fueron informados de estar infectados con el virus.
Hasta el momento, más de 65,000 brasileños han muerto por COVID-19 y más de 1,500,000 han sido infectados. Ambos números son los segundos totales más altos del mundo, y se consideran menos que la falta de pruebas generalizadas.
