Los investigadores de la OMS afirmaron que la pandemia es el verdadero “Chernobyl del siglo XXI”. Además, pidieron reformas urgentes de los sistemas de alerta y prevención.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) contrató a expertos independientes para investigar el origen del virus que mató a 3,3 millones de personas y destruyó la economía mundial. En el informe que se publicó en la sede de la OMS en Ginebra, los investigadores denunciaron que la pandemia es el verdadero “Chernobyl del siglo XXI” y pidieron reformas urgentes de los sistemas de alerta y prevención. “La situación en la que nos encontramos hoy podría haberse evitado”, dijo Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, ex presidenta de Liberia.
Si bien el informe no señaló a ningún culpable, apuntó “a una gran cantidad de fracasos, lagunas y retrasos en la preparación y la respuesta” a la pandemia. En conferencia de prensa, indicaron: “Es evidente que la combinación de malas decisiones estratégicas, de una falta de voluntad para abordar las desigualdades y de un sistema mal coordinado, creó un cóctel tóxico que ha permitido a la pandemia convertirse en una crisis humana catastrófica”.
El director general de la OMS, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus informó que el grupo independiente, formado por 13 expertos, pasó los últimos ocho meses examinando la propagación de la pandemia y las medidas tomadas por el organismo sanitario y los países para enfrentarla.
El objetivo de la investigación se debió a las críticas a la OMS, el organismo de salud de la ONU, por su demora en recomendar las mascarillas y por presuntamente haber sido complaciente con China cuando detectó por primera vez el coronavirus y haber tardado en declarar el estado de emergencia sanitaria mundial.
Los expertos estuvieron de acuerdo con que “transcurrió demasiado tiempo” entre la notificación de un foco epidémico de neumonía de origen desconocido en la segunda quincena de diciembre de 2019 y la declaración el 30 de enero por la OMS, de una emergencia de salud pública de alcance internacional, el más alto nivel de alarma.
En ese sentido, los investigadores indicaron que la alerta podría haberse emitido ocho días antes, cuando se reunió por primera vez el Comité de Emergencia de la OMS.
Para evitar que se repita esta situación, el informe propuso la creación de un Consejo Mundial de Lucha contra las Amenazas Sanitarias. También, el establecimiento de un nuevo sistema mundial de vigilancia basado en una “transparencia total” en el que la OMS no esté obligada a esperar la aprobación de los países miembros para publicar información importante.
Además, llamó a los países ricos a proporcionar desde ahora hasta el 2022, unas 2.000 millones de dosis de vacunas -al menos 1.000 millones de ellas antes de septiembre- para poner fin a la propagación de la COVID-19.
