Montañista ciego mexicano hizo cumbre en el volcán Ojos del Salado
Junto a un equipo de guías y a un compatriota logró el objetivo inédito.
Una historia de desafíos
Rafael Jaime fue también la primera persona ciega de Iberoamérica que ha alcanzado la cima de la montaña Aconcagua y Denali.
Denali es la montaña más alta de América del Norte y como tal significa uno de los mayores retos para aquellos que se dedican al montañismo. Ese mismo desafío es el que Rafael Jaime Jaramillo decidió afrontar junto a su entrañable amigo Omar Álvarez, y lo hicieron.
El par de amigos alcanzaron la cumbre de este imponente cuerpo rocoso a finales de junio pasado y su hazaña está siendo reconocida por todos lados, y no solo por el hecho de llegar a la cima.
La historia de Rafa Jaime y Omar Álvarez es todo menos común. A lo largo de su vida, cada uno ha debido lidiar con todo tipo de experiencias desafortunadas, las mismas que de una u otra forma los encaminaron hasta la disciplina del montañismo. Por un lado, Omar cuenta que su incursión en esta actividad se dio tras el fallecimiento de su padre.
“Mi padre, antes de morir, como última voluntad, nos pide que sus cenizas se lleven a la cumbre de la montaña más alta de México (el Pico de Orizaba). Buscando cumplir esa última voluntad de mi padre, durante un año me preparo y logro llevar sus cenizas al ‘techo de México’ y es así como llego al montañismo y me enamoro de esta filosofía que me ha cambiado la vida”.
Rafa Jaime, radicado en Durango, abogado de profesión y anteriormente triatleta, contó que a los 5 años le habían diagnosticado un retinoblastoma bilateral (cáncer en los ojos), lo que derivó en la pérdida de uno de sus ojos. Luego, 13 años después, un problema similar le costaría la pérdida del otro.
Él enfatiza que a raíz de ello le encontró un nuevo significado a la vida. El deporte, comenta, lo ayudó a depurar emociones negativas, algo que eventualmente complementaría en 2018 cuando descubrió su pasión por el montañismo, también en el Pico de Orizaba.
“Recorrí el mundo a través del deporte en el triatlón, carreras en montaña, desiertos… En 2018 descubrí el montañismo. Ahí fue donde encontré una forma diferente de sentir el mundo, de explorarlo, y en este descubrimiento, conocí a Omar” señaló. El objetivo final de este equipo es llegar al Everest, la montaña más alta del mundo.
