Por qué se dice Países Bajos y no Holanda: campaña por el nombre

Este es el equipo de Países Bajos (no de Holanda) que enfrentará a la Argentina este viernes, a las 16.
A la espera de los cuartos de final del Mundial de Qatar, una situación especial se presenta en el próximo rival de Argentina.
Se trata de Países Bajos, cuyo gobierno inició en 2020 una campaña para que lo llamen así y dejen de identificarlo como Holanda.
“Países Bajos, no Holanda”, aseguran desde el país europeo.
Este es el mensaje que las autoridades de dicha nación transmiten a todo el mundo, como nombre oficial del Estado.

Toda la ingeniería estatal de ese país, como ministerios e instituciones deportivas y culturales, junto con las principales ciudades del país, lanzaron desde hace un par de años atrás una campaña informativa y de marketing para eliminar el uso de la denominación “Holanda”, y así usar “Países Bajos”.
La justificación, desde la propia nación europea, se basa en la siguiente aclaración: “Holanda apenas es una región que compone el territorio del Estado de Países Bajos, que es parte de la Unión Europea”, manifestaron.
La confusión surgió porque Holanda es un espacio histórico, tradicional e influyente del mencionado país, cuyo idioma oficial y gentilicio es el neerlandés.
Por ejemplo, el sitio web oficial de turismo que siempre se llamó Holland.com, y su equipo de fútbol también lo ha evitado.
Ahora eso cambió y progresivamente toda la cartelería local lo hará.

¿Por qué siempre se dijo Holanda?
Países Bajos es la traducción al español de Nederland, que viene del término en neerlandés “Neder-landen”, que significa “tierras bajas”.
El país se denomina así por la ubicación orográfica de su territorio, el cual se encuentra parcialmente debajo del nivel medio del mar.
La denominación “Holanda” procede del nombre de la región del mismo nombre que se encuentra en el oeste del país y que se divide en dos provincias: Holanda del Norte y Holanda del Sur.

Es por ello que hay neerlandeses que son holandeses, pero los habitantes de alguna de las otras 10 provincias no son holandeses.
Tampoco lo son los habitantes de sus territorios del Caribe, entre ellos Aruba, Curazao y Saint Maarten.En el siglo XIX surgió el reino de los Países Bajos, el cual dio nombre al país actual. La Real Academia Española, en su Diccionario Panhispánico de Dudas (2005), reconoce el nombre oficial de este país como Países Bajos.
“El nombre Holanda designa estrictamente una región occidental de los Países Bajos, dividida en dos provincias, Holanda del Norte y Holanda del Sur”, refiere.
También considera “frecuente y admisible” en el habla coloquial usar Holanda para referirse a todo el país, pero recomienda no hacerlo en textos oficiales.
