En esta fecha se conmemora el día en que el martes 9 de julio de 1816 los diputados de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata se reunieron en San Miguel de Tucumán y declararon la independencia del gobierno español para las provincias de Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay y Bolivia.
La reunión fue en la casa de Francisca Bazán de Laguna debido a la falta de un espacio propio en donde las autoridades pudieran deliberar la histórica decisión.
Declarada en 1941 Monumento histórico nacional, es conocida actualmente con el nombre de «la casita de Tucumán» o Casa histórica de la independencia y es el centro de este día festivo.
