Tiene 73 años, es dueño de una histórica autopartista argentina y ahora apuesta a los autos eléctricos
Norberto Taranto empezó a estudiar qué partes de las nuevas motorizaciones puede hacer su fabricante de juntas y retenes para motor.
Fuerte en el mercado de reposición, quiere penetrar más entre terminales. Busca entrar a la Taos, de Volksagen, y está ingresando a Hilux, de Toyota.
El 25 de mayo, Norberto Taranto cumplió 73 años. Pasaron 40 desde que fundó la autopartista que lleva su apellido. Hoy, tiene tres plantas –Buenos Aires, San Juan y Córdoba– y emplea a 850 personas, 80 de las cuales se incorporaron en plena pandemia.
Mientras busca cómo hacer para que su grupo recupere los u$s 75 millones anuales de facturación que supo alcanzar en 2010 -en buena parte por la devaluación, recién pudo cruzar la mitad de ese camino-, el empresario ya está pensando en cómo superar un desafío mucho mayor, tal vez, que las tempestades locales que atravesó a lo largo de estas cuatro décadas. Uno que, prácticamente, definirá la supervivencia de su negocio, la fabricación de juntas, retenes y otras piezas metálicas de motor y dirección para vehículos.
«Estamos estudiando qué del motor eléctrico podemos hacer«, cuenta Taranto, en diálogo con El Cronista Comercial. «En unos años, se reconvertirá todo lo que es el power-train. No habrá motor, ni caja de velocidad, ni embragues«, explica. Según sus números, la ventana de oportunidad es lejana, pero no tanto. «El mundo tiene una producción anual de 97 millones de vehículos contra un parque de 1200 millones. Faltan 12 años para que se produzca un recambio total, 14 en la Argentina», avizora, sabiendo que esos plazos, en la industria automotriz, son prácticamente mañana.
«Siempre y cuando, la producción del 100% de las automotrices sea con motor eléctrico. Hoy, no llega al 5%. Pero es lo que vendrá. En América, quizás, un poco después que Europa», razona.
Taranto ya tiene clara cómo será su transición. Seguirá produciendo piezas mecánicas para el mercado de reposición, que continuará existiendo. Entre tanto, también está migrando en el perfil de partes que produce en la actualidad. «Estamos yendo hacia lo que es suspensión, dirección y freno. Todo lo que es la parte inferior del vehículo. De eso, tenemos una certeza: hasta que el auto no levite, es cómo seguirá andando«, señala.
En San Juan, Taranto fabrica todo lo que es sellado para motor. Principalmente, juntas y retenes. También, de forma incipiente, embragues, extremos de dirección y rótulas de suspensión. Por segmento, el 80% es para mercado de reposición y el resto, para equipo original. Por destino, la mitad de esa producción va a Brasil, que traccionó fuerte en el último año y ya tiene una participación superior al 20% en ese mercado.
En Buenos Aires, estampa tornillos para cajas de velocidad y motores. El 40% para aftermarket y el 60% para terminales. En Córdoba, en tanto, hace la forja para engranajes de cajas de velocidad. El 90% de la producción es para la planta de transmisiones de Volkswagen en la misma provincia. El resto se distribuye a otras automotrices.
En 2010, las empresas de Taranto -que incluyen una finca y una planta de procesamiento de pasas de uva, en San Juan- facturaron u$s 75 millones. En 2020, registraron u$s 40 millones y, pese a la devaluación, proyecta superar esa merca este año. «Nuestro objetivo es volver a alcanzar los u$s 75 millones. Pero es difícil: el tipo de cambio distorsiona mucho», explica.
Un vector de crecimiento será penetrar más en el negocio de terminales. Actualmente, produce un gancho de rueda auxilio para la Amarok, que Volkswagen produce en Pacheco. El modelo, recientemente, tuvo un recall grande, lo que a la autopartista le significó una venta spot importante. «Tuvimos que tomar 20 personas más», dimensiona.
Actualmente, Taranto hace los deberes para entrar también a Taos, el SUV que VW lanzó en estos días, tras una inversión de u$s 650 millones. También está calificando para producir la tuercas de seguridad de la Hilux, pick-up que Toyota exporta al resto de la región y de la que la japonesa planea una producción de 145.000 unidades este año.
El grupo está trabajando al 55% de su capacidad instalada, medida en tres turnos de producción. «Con materia prima, podríamos estar tranquilamente al 80%«, dice.
«La productividad nos bajó mucho. No podemos trabajar just-in-time porque operamos en función de la materia prima que estamos recibiendo», describe.
«Como empresa, tenemos balanza comercial positiva, lo que no nos genera dificultades con las SIMI (N.d.R.: licencias de importación). Tampoco, para pagar la mercadería cuando la recibimos, aunque sí hay algunos bloqueos si queremos dar anticipos», aclara.
Sin embargo, la raíz de sus problemas de abastecimiento está en los países de origen de los insumos.
«El papel para juntas, por ejemplo, es fibra de papel mezclado con kevlar. Es un sustituto del amianto. Nuestro proveedor de ese papel nos responde que él mismo tiene problemas con sus insumos», ejemplifica. «Tenemos pedidos hechos desde octubre y ya nos comimos todo el stock de materia prima«, dimensiona.
Dificultad similar encuentra con el acero. «No con el de producción local, que le compramos a Ternium. Pero sí con el acero de forja y para tornillos, que viene de Brasil. Nos deben pedidos muy viejos. Para los de forja, incluso, nos pusieron un cupo», cuenta Taranto.
El proveedor sólo le responde qué el mismo tiene muchos problemas para conseguir su propia materia prima. «La chatarra para aceros está a precios siderales. Acá, estamos pagando u$s 1200 la tonelada de alambre para tornillo. En Brasil y en Europa, se están pagando u$s 500 por la chatarra. Hay escasez mundial de acero. Una de las razones es la falta de abastecimiento desde China, que no está exportando. Tenía un subsidio del 13% para la exportación de acero y, hace un mes, el Gobierno lo quitó porque prefiere privilegiar a su mercado local», contextualiza el empresario.
No obstante, ve que esta barrera se removerá, como máximo, en cuatro meses. «Europa y los Estados Unidos ya se están poniendo al día. Brasil sigue con muchos problemas por el tema Covid», observa. Un obstáculo menos, dentro de todos los que, subraya, tiene la Argentina para exportar.
«A veces, escucho que, para producir más, hacen falta inversiones. Para hacerlo, hay que tener menos trabas y más beneficios para quienes exportamos mano de obra agregada a la materia prima», razona. «El gran problema para la exportación es la falta de competitividad, debido a la gran carga impositiva. Tenemos una fábrica dimensionada para tres argentinas. Entonces, si no exportamos, estamos muertos«, enfatiza.
Un ejemplo son los reintegros a la exportación, dice. Actualmente, del 5%. «Con todos los impuestos que pagamos, debería ser no menor al 12%», contrasta. Los reintegros se están pagando con retrasos de cuatro a seis meses. Lo cual, en un contexto devaluatorio, implica algún tipo de compensación. «Como el reintegro es en dólares, eso queda cubierto en moneda dura», indica.
La gestión financiera también es clave. «Estamos teniendo un manejo muy prudente. Durante la última parte del gobierno del PRO, pagábamos tasas del 70%, 80%. Empezamos a cubrir deuda con inventarios (que bajaron) porque las tasas eran impagables», narra.
«El año pasado, pagamos tasas subsidiadas, que rondaron el 24%, 26%. Hoy, estamos con un promedio de 35%. Contra una inflación superior al 40%, es algo muy aceptable», compra.
«Estamos tomando lo que vamos precisando, aunque no lo que conseguíamos antes a nivel dólar«, describe los pasos actuales.
Otro punto que le exige cautela es la política de precios. «Estamos actualizando la lista una vez por mes. Estamos más o menos al nivel de la inflación, o por arriba, debido al aumento en origen de los insumos», refiere. La falta de oferta de materia prima, señala, estuvo acompañada de un aumento de precios, por un lado, y del dólar, por otro. «En origen, el acero aumentó un promedio de 30% en dólares. A eso, también hay que sumarle que traer un contenedor de China salía u$s 2000 y, ahora, cuesta u$s 9000», ilustra.
Eso lo fuerza a retocar valores sin, por caso, sofocar la incipiente recuperación de la demanda doméstica en el aftermarket.
«Hay demanda. No es que la gente especula con comprar más para acopiar. Sino que le tiene mucho miedo al transporte público y repara sus vehículos, sin importar su condición o antigüedad», diagnostica.
Otro factor que le garantiza actividad es recuperar las siete semanas que las plantas debieron parar el año pasado, por la cuarentena.
«Mientras estuvimos cinco semanas sin vender en la Argentina, la distribuidora de Brasil siguió abierta. Eso nos dejó con muy bajo stock. Hoy, estamos sobrevendidos en el aftermarket. Tenemos un nivel alto de consumo en Brasil y la Argentina y mucho faltante», describe.
«Esta es una crisis distinta a las anteriores. Acá, siempre, hubo crisis de demanda: no teníamos a quién venderle. Podíamos acumular inventarios en la estantería. Hoy, por la crisis de abastecimiento de materia prima, no estamos logrando las cantidades que necesitamos para proveer a nuestra demanda«, compara Taranto.
