En este sentido, y con el objetivo de conocer más sobre el mar austral y sus bosques de macroalgas, «Sin Azul No Hay Verde», el programa marino de la Fundación Rewilding Argentina, realizó la primera expedición científica con investigadores y buzos argentinos a Península Mitre , en el extremo suroriental de la Isla Grande Tierra del Fuego.
«Hasta entonces los estudios sobre esta región eran muy escasos, especialmente en relación a los bosques de macroalgas y su contribución a la regulación climática global», sostiene un comunicado de la Fundación.
Los bosques de macroalgas son las selvas del mar y estas algas gigantes «son responsables de capturar carbono y liberar oxígeno proporcionando gran parte del oxígeno que respiramos», agrega.
«A nivel global son uno de los ecosistemas más productivos y se estima que almacenan 173 millones de toneladas de carbono anualmente, el doble de lo almacenado en todo el Amazonas», añade el comunicado.
La expedición a Península Mitre reveló que la Argentina cuenta con la oportunidad de salvar uno de los últimos refugios de algas kelp del planeta.
«Hoy sabemos que si no logramos globalmente desacelerar el aumento de las temperaturas del océano dentro de los próximos 100 años, el Mar Patagónico será uno de los últimos refugios de agua fría en la planeta»
Así, se conoció que «casi el 50% de todos los bosques de Macrocystis Pyrifera de Argentina se encuentran en Península Mitre e Isla de los Estados».
También se comprobó que la abundancia de algas gigantes, erizos de mar y estrellas de mar alrededor de Tierra del Fuego no han cambiado en más de 45 años, posicionando a los bosques de algas de la punta extrema de América del Sur entre los más prístinos de la Tierra.
El área de Península Mitre abarca una superficie de unas 300.000 hectáreas de tierra y 200.000 de mar. Hace más de 30 años que se busca declararla área natural protegida provincial, pero hasta la fecha el proyecto de ley no ha sido aprobado.
A finales de 2020 el Gobierno Provincial de Tierra del Fuego emitió un Decreto para declararla de Interés Ambiental, Natural y Cultural y así otorgarle una categoría de conservación provisoria hasta tanto sea protegida de manera definitiva por ley, precisa la Fundación.
«Hoy sabemos que si no logramos globalmente desacelerar el aumento de las temperaturas del océano dentro de los próximos 100 años, el Mar Patagónico será uno de los últimos refugios de agua fría en la planeta. Proteger lugares como Península Mitre, no tiene relevancia solo a nivel provincial o nacional, sino que tiene un impacto global», abunda el comunicado.
Según Maria Bagur, doctora en biología e investigadora del Cadic-Conicet, que participó de la expedición, «los bosques de macroalgas generan muchos servicios ecosistémicos: protección costera, frenan las olas y protegen a las costas de la erosión, absorben el dióxido de carbono, mitigan el calentamiento global, generan protección, refugio y alimento a muchas especies».
«Existen pocos lugares como éste, destaca, con un nivel de diversidad tan alta y tan poco impactado. Esto es impagable. Tenemos que conservar Península Mitre para poder mantener un lugar único en el planeta Tierra», advirtió.
Por su parte, Julieta Kaminsky, licenciada en ciencias ambientales (Becaria doctoral Cadic – Conicet), formó parte de la expedición y opinó que perder Península Mitres nos privaría de «un lugar que tiene el privilegio de albergar uno de los ecosistemas marinos más productivos, que aporta numerosos servicios ecosistémicos fundamentales para hacerle frente a la crisis climática global y que está lejos del impacto crónico del ser humano.»
Para dar a conocer los resultados de la investigación e involucrar a la sociedad, según el comunicado, la agencia de publicidad Digitas Buenos Aires desarrolló un juego que invita a conocer sobre las amenazas a la Península y una petición que ya lleva más de 190,000 firmas juntadas a favor de la protección de ese espacio.
