Tras casi ocho meses reabre Machu Picchu

La ciudadela inca de Machu Picchu reabre en el marco de una paulatina reducción de contagios de covid-19 en Perú, tras estar casi ocho meses cerrada, un duro golpe para miles de personas que viven del turismo.

Los responsables de la ciudadela, declarada patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco desde 1983, hacían este domingo los últimos ajustes para la ceremonia de reapertura, prevista al anochecer.

El primer tren con turistas –y con un equipo de la AFP- llegó hacia las 07H00 de la mañana (12H00 GMT) a Machu Picchu Pueblo, la aldea más próxima a la mítica ciudadela, tras un viaje de una hora y media bordeando el río Urubamba desde la antigua aldea inca de Ollantaytambo.

Escondida entre los montes de los Andes, la majestuosa ciudadela de piedra recibirá el lunes a sus primeros visitantes, algunos de los cuales ya se encuentran en el cercano pueblo, tras permanecer cerrada desde el 16 de marzo por la pandemia.

«Poder abrir Machu Picchu al mundo, poder abrir nuestra maravilla, implica que los peruanos somos resilientes», dijo a la AFP en la ciudadela la ministra de Comercio Exterior y Turismo, Rocío Barrios, quien encabezará la ceremonia de reapertura.

Con la reapertura renacen las esperanzas en Cusco, la antigua capital del imperio inca, y en los pueblos del Valle Sagrado de los Incas, que son paso obligado hacia Machu Picchu y enfrentan una aguda crisis económica como secuela de la pandemia, pues el 70% de su gente vivía del turismo.

Tras un confinamiento obligatorio de más de 100 días, levantado el 1 de julio, muchos hoteles, restaurantes y otros negocios de la zona se fueron a la quiebra y miles de trabajadores quedaron sin empleo.

«Antes de que llegara la pandemia había 80 hoteles y hotelitos en Ollantaytambo, pero han quebrado por lo menos la mitad de ellos», dijo a la AFP Joaquín Randall, presidente de la Asociación de Hoteles y Restaurantes de este pueblo, situado a 32 km de la ciudadela.

«Los hoteles formales, que pagan impuestos y que están al día con el estado, han podido acceder a créditos» del gobierno, pero no los numerosos alojamientos informales, agregó Randall, dueño del hotel El Albergue (tres estrellas) y del restaurante El Chuncho.

En Ollantaytambo todos los viajeros deben abordar un tren para seguir a Machu Picchu, porque más adelante se acaba el camino.
