Uno de los destinos turísticos más visitados de Argentina se convirtió en el escenario de una tragedia en las últimas horas, cuando un turista brasileño murió aplastado por un pedazo de hielo que se desprendió del techo de una cueva en Ushuahia, en la provincia de Tierra del Fuego. Según confirmaron fuente judiciales, el acceso a ese lugar era prohibido.
El hombre, en grupo junto a otros turistas, intentaba ingresar al sitio conocido como “Cueva de Jimbo” o “Cueva de hielo”, una formación de gran belleza natural situada en una zona de glaciares, a varios kilómetros del centro de la capital fueguina y dentro del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. Al lugar solo se llega luego de realizar una extensa caminata.
En las imágenes grabadas por un miembro del contingente brasileño, se puede ver cómo el grupo se acercó peligrosamente hasta el interior del reducto recubierto por una capa de rocas y hielo. En hilera, poco a poco van avanzando en el terreno inseguro, incluso se escucha que uno de ellos pide ‘tener mucho cuidado’. Sin embargo la advertencia no fue suficiente, ya que a los pocos segundos la muerte cayó desde el aire. Así también lo relataron los voceros consultados, quienes subrayan que cuando uno de los turistas comenzaba a entrar en la formación, se desprendió un trozo de hielo y este lo golpeó en la cabeza. De inmediato, el turista que se encontraba grabando suelta la cámara y corre a socorrerlo, en el video pueden escucharse los gritos desesperados de los demás visitantes, al tiempo que también se ve un cartel que advierte sobre la prohibición del paso.
Horas más tarde al accidente, integrantes de la Comisión de Auxilio arribaron al lugar y confirmaron el deceso del visitante, cuyo cuerpo recién podría ser rescatado y trasladado hasta la ciudad durante la madrugada o mañana del día siguiente, según afirman fuentes consultadas por Télam.
El trágico suceso dio lugar a que se inicie la causa judicial en el Juzgado de Instrucción 1 de Ushuaia, a cargo del juez Javier De Gamas Soler, quien ya ordenó la autopsia del fallecido apenas se recupere el cadáver. Al mismo tiempo el magistrado también dispuso la toma de declaraciones testimoniales.

Desde 2021 que las autoridades del Parque Nacional advierten sobre el peligro de acercarse a la ‘Cueva de Jimbo’. La medida se debe principalmente a los estudios científicos del Centro Austral de Investigaciones Científicos (Cadic, dependiente del Conicet), los cuales corroboraron que el lugar se encuentra en ‘peligro de colapso’ y que es habitual que trozos de hielo y piedras caigan del techo.
Según medios locales, la intendencia del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego ya se había pronunciado al remarcar esta situación: “Estudios recientes de este glaciar, realizado por profesionales del CADIC-CONICET, evidencian que el sitio presenta una dinámica muy activa, con una intensa fusión de hielo que produce la caída constante de fragmentos de hielo y roca. Asimismo afirman que el adelgazamiento del techo genera grietas sobre el glaciar las que provocarán su colapso. Por lo que esperamos contar con su cooperación para no tener que lamentar accidentes”.
