Sergio «Maravilla» Martínez confirmó este viernes que su anunciado retorno al boxeo será el 22 de agosto en la ciudad española de Torrelavega, en una cartelera que tendrá como protagonista principal a su pupilo Sergio García, actual campeón europeo superwelter.
La velada será organizada por Maravibox, la empresa del propio «Maravilla», y se celebrará durante las fiestas de la Virgen Grande de Torrelavega y además de Martínez y García se presentará el ex campeón mundial supergallo Kiko Martínez.

“No me importa no ser cabeza de cartel, necesito hacer el combate de regreso ya mismo, el tiempo corre en mi contra”, afirmó Martínez en un comunicado de su promotora Maravibox, organizadora de la cartelera, agregando que «el rival será anunciado en próximas fechas».
El ex campeón superwelter CMB y mediano CMB y OMB, de 46 años, nacido en Quilmes y residente en Madrid, iba a combatir el 6 de junio pero la velada fue cancelada por la pandemia del coronavirus.
«Maravilla» retornará al ring tras más de seis años de inactividad, ya que su última pelea en junio de 2014, en la que perdió con el puertorriqueño Miguel Cotto, en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, resignando sus títulos medianos.
Esta derrota y sus lesiones en las rodillas lo llevaron a anunciar su retiro a finales de 2014, pero en febrero de este año anunció su retorno a la actividad con el joven entrenador madrileño Tinín Rodríguez en su esquina.
«Maravilla» Martínez se retiró con un palmarés de 51 victorias (28 ko), 3 derrotas y 2 empates y entre sus vencidos figuran boxeadores de la talla de los estadounidenses Kelly Pavlik y Paul Williams, el mexicano Julio César Chávez junior y el británico Martin Murray.
