Ballenas muertas en las costas de Chubut

Crece la hipótesis de la intoxicación por la «Marea Roja»

De confirmarse esta hipótesis, podrían haber más ballenas damnificadas y se deberá «esperar a que pase el proceso natural» ya que no se puede prevenir. Los locales no pueden comer moluscos ni caracoles de la zona.

Desde hace poco más de dos semanas hasta la fecha, se encontraron sin vida 13 ballenas francas australes en el Golfo Nuevo de la Península de Valdés, provincia de Chubut. La principal hipótesis es un proceso natural conocido como «marea roja» y de confirmarse, expertos aseguran que habrá que esperar a que culmine este proceso sin poder comer moluscos ni caracoles de la zona y con el riesgo de encontrar más ballenas damnificadas.

Según informó el Instituto de Conservación de Ballenas (ICB) de Chubut en el último comunicado de su página oficial, se detectaron «al menos 12 individuos adultos y un subadulto muertos en aguas del Golfo Nuevo». El informe recordó que «la primera ballena muerta fue registrada el sábado 24 estando en cercanías de Punta Pardelas por el equipo de investigadores del proyecto Siguiendo Ballenas».

Necropsias para determinar la causa

El equipo del ICB, a través del Programa de Monitoreo Sanitario Ballena Franca Austral (Pmsbfa), se encuentra trabajando en las necropsias de las ballenas francas australes y colaborando con otras instituciones y especialistas de la Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia San Juan Bosco, el Centro Nacional Patagónico (Cenpat) dependiente del Conicet y el Laboratorio Provincial de Salud Ambiental.

«El objetivo más urgente es realizar los estudios post-mortem (necropsias) de las ballenas encontradas, recolectar y analizar muestras de agua y bivalvos para determinar la presencia de biotoxinas por floraciones algales nocivas (comúnmente llamadas marea roja), que es una de las hipótesis que están siendo evaluadas en relación a la muerte de las ballenas» explicó el informe.

Agustina Donini, coordinadora de Campo del Programa, detalló que «ninguna de las ballenas evaluadas hasta el momento presentó evidencia de lesiones traumáticas ni enmallamientos, y todas se encontraron con muy buen estado nutricional, con evidencia de contenido intestinal en algunos ejemplares, indicando su alimentación reciente dentro del golfo”.

Marea Roja, la principal hipótesis

El director de Fauna y Flora de la provincia de Chubut, Fernando Bersano, confirmó a PERFIL que «la hipótesis más fuerte es la de las toxinas» y que los especialistas aguardan los resultados para determinar esa causa como la originaria. «Dieron muy altas las toxinas por la marea roja, pasa siempre en esta época del año y hay que esperar», advirtió.

Es que el fenómeno de la marea roja sucede siempre entre la primavera y el verano, pero Bersano confió en que  «hacía años que no pasaba esto, pasó en 2007, donde hubo un mismo nivel de toxinas, pero sin mortalidad. Algunas veces es tóxica y otras no«.

En este caso, el fenómeno de la marea roja genera que cuando se calientan las aguas, prolifera el fitoplancton y determinadas especies liberan una alta cantidad de toxinas. «Se apunta a eso, que las ballenas comen en el Golfo unas tres toneladas de estos bichos, los filtran, e ingresan muchas toxinas», confió Bersano.

También confirmó que queda descartada una hipótesis de que podría haber sido una contaminación de microplástico: «No es eso porque se murieron las primeras siete en óptimo estado, gordas, algunas con leche, es algo agudo de golpe, en 72 horas se dio todo eso», advirtió.

Ballenas

Lo que ahora se busca es encontrar estas toxinas en órganos de las ballenas fallecidas para confirmar esta teoría: «Lo que mas a tardar es ese estudio, porque se metabolizan rápido en el organismo, se buscan microlesiones en el riñón, cerebro, ojo, etc. Son órganos difíciles, si se hayan toxinas ahí, permitiría correlacionar esto», argumentó.

Veda para comer moluscos y caracoles

Por esta hipótesis de las toxinas es que la provincia determinó suspender la alimentación de cualquier bivalvo (moluscos acuáticos) de esa zona. «Ni moluscos ni caracoles se pueden comer. La veda es sólo para capturar eso, pero no se prohíbe actividad náutica», aclaró Bersano.

Y concluyó es que de confirmarse, es un proceso natural del que no se puede hacer mucho para evitar: «No podemos hacer nada, es un ciclo natural, no se puede prevenir ni tratar, hay que dejarlo que cumpla, no se sabe cuánto dura tampoco».
